Many different computer platforms can be personal (such as MS-DOS computers, PCs, OS / 2, PCs, UNIX workstations, Apple Macintosh, and various handheld devices), but now the most common is the IBM-compatible PC operating system Microsoft Windows.

Client-server tools and services: –
The client-server systems can be complex, but well integrated and well designed user interfaces and technical complexity is invisible to the user, is essentially a problem of application developers and service provider. They need software development tools and professional services that help to control and hide the complexity. Many of the tools and services needed are the same as ever, but is also a special need for client-server systems.
Important general point of view is that a compressed file ( “shrink-packed), application software, the user does not need to program equipment of construction companies. Packaged in a client-server application products are becoming widely available (for example, sharing office and groupware applications, business applications, the practices of accounting, personnel and payroll applications).
Another important trend is that the range of tools (and languages) are needed in different parts of the application of modular systems. The main differences are:
• User Interface: languages and tools for building graphical user interfaces, and each logic closely related to E. g. the GUI, and Visual Basic.
• Database: languages and tools for the construction of databases, file systems and to maintain and develop the application logic, closely related to E. g. languages for data manipulation and relational database 4GL-programmers.
• Business logic: languages and tools for creating application logic is logically separate from user interfaces and databases, e. g. COBOL.
• distributed computing: languages and tools specializing in distributed computing, and covers all the functional areas mentioned above (and other technical and organizational limitations), E. g. Remote Procedure Call (RPC) instruments.
• System management: methods and tools for electronic software distribution, and the use and development of client-server systems.
Most of these tools, with similar areas of middleware.
Chapter-6
Client-server: –
Looking at the technology described in the previous section, three types of client-server architecture can be observed.
Basic client-server: –
The basic client-server, an individual or a centralized application is divided into two parts: the client platform personnel, and the server side, server platform. The latter is often a shared resource, such as the conclusion of the service, printing service, database, or some application specific function. The terms of the client and the server is used to refer to the hardware platforms and software components (often a bit ‘vague).
Basic client-server architecture is shown in Figure 9 (and has already been presented in detail in Chapter 6).

Basic client-server configurations, which are usually around a local area network (LAN). The whole assembly is usually described in the PC-LAN, and have a PC ideal for personal use (personal platforms) as well as one or more common PC (server platform). Local server platforms for these PC-LAN networks typically offer gateways to the size of the company and external networks and servers are. This is shown in Figure 10

Although predominantly expressed in PC and PC-LAN, the basic concepts of client-server apply to all types of computers and networks (eg, PC, UNIX, mainframe, LAN and WAN).
Beyond the basics: –
Beyond the basic client-server is a peer-to-peer processing, processing cooperatives and independent reading.
The term peer-to-peer processing is used to refer to configurations where there is no server platforms and server components of applications can be found in the platforms of staff. Networks on this basis is called peer-to-peer. This is an economical way to implement the small PC LANs, etc., but does not have a separate server platform, to reduce the integrity of the system and lead to difficulties in administering the scheme.
Reading the cooperative term is used to refer to configurations where application software is divided into more than one platform dedicated server and the client and server ends of the combined effects of both server platforms. This includes the interaction between different applications, not only between the parties to the same application.
The separate treatment of the term used to refer to configurations in which all parts of the application is the same platform (usually a platform for staff). All client-server between the parties are not visible externally.
People can also use the term peer-to-peer, and, alternatively, the co-operative treatment, and many other meanings. This causes confusion and misunderstanding. There are also many other less-known phrases such as application server and the producer / consumer. All major formats are described in Figure 11, together with

Unfortunately, many people are clearly distinct from other concepts from client-server (which actually refers to the basic client-server). This obscures the essential fact that all the options within a single structure: a client-server architecture. It will also misleading statements that the client-server (for example, basic-client-server) has died and been replaced by other techniques, such as the production cooperative.

As the graph on the right, the building element can be both users and suppliers. Therefore it may be a client and server roles and may participate in many client-server relationships with other building blocks. It is only the client or the server context of the special relationship is maintained.

Types of Architecture: –
Given the shift from client / server, and to replace existing systems or introduce entirely new systems, operators must determine what type of architecture they intend to use. The vast majority of end-user applications consists of three parts: presentation, treatment and information. Client / server architectures can be defined, as these components are divided into community and network software distribution. There are several ways to distribute the funds and the implementation of client / server architectures. This book focuses on the most popular implementation of the two levels and three-tier client / server computer systems.
Architecture in two levels: –
While there are several ways to architect a two-tier client / server system, we will focus on the study, which is by far the most common application. In this implementation, the three components of the application (presentation, processing, and data) are divided between two software entities, (levels): the code of client application and database server (Figure 2). Robust demand for client development language and versatile system for transmitting the client requests the server are essential for a two-level implementation. Presentation deals only with the client computing is divided between client and server, and recording of data and access to the server. PC-client application, the main responsibility (activity) of processing component logic, while the database engine – and the associated integrity of the audit, investigation, and the capacity of central library of functions – data processing demanding tasks. Two levels architectures work well for relatively homogeneous environments, relatively static business rules. This architecture is less suitable for distributed heterogeneous environments are rapidly changing the rules. Tree-level architecture (Figure 3) attempts to solve some of the restrictions on two-tier system of separating presentation, processing, and data on separate, different software entities (levels). Furthermore, transparency in a number of other benefits are provided for this architecture. After separate entities software to allow simultaneous development of individual levels of experts demand. • Presentation Layer: This layer is below the interaction between the direct data exchange (DDE), as part of the management system of windows or through scripts, see [Duxbury, 1994], in which application software uses the ‘user interface, simulating a human user.
